En 2016, Instagram a passé son feed de chronologique à « intelligent », poussant des contenus dits plus pertinents pour vous. Un changement qui a perturbé un bon nombre d’utilisateurs qui ne comprennent pas toujours la manière dont fonctionnent les algorithmes du réseau social.
On est tous un peu perdus quand il s’agit d’expliquer des algos des réseaux sociaux avec des variables plus ou moins obscures qui sont régulièrement modifiées. Bien que les fonctionnements de Facebook et de Twitter commencent à être connus notamment à cause des différents scandales qui les touchent, celui d’Instagram pose encore beaucoup de questions, notamment celui des stories. En effet, si Snapchat a fait le choix de trier les personnes ayant vues vos stories de manière chronologique, Instagram a intégré une logique encore assez floue. Plus qu’un Top Viewers, un Top Stalkers !
Le mystère entourant la liste de ceux qui regardent nos stories a tourmenté certains d’entre nous, les Social Media Managers en tête. Si bien que plusieurs utilisateurs du célèbre forum américain Reddit se sont penchés sur la question.
Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait penser instinctivement, ce n’est ni une liste chronologique ni une liste basée sur nos interactions avec les autres utilisateurs. Ce n’est pas parce que vous serez le premier à voir et commenter la story d’un ami que vous serez le premier sur sa liste de viewers.
En réalité, il semblerait que la liste vous montre ceux qui regardent le plus votre contenu sans jamais avoir d’interaction avec. Autrement dit, il s’agit de la liste de vos stalkers !
Une conclusion appuyée par un témoignage d’un utilisateur de Reddit. Sur le forum, cet internaute explique :
« J’ai essayé une petite expérience avec un de mes amis. Pendant quelques jours, j’ai beaucoup visité son profil tous les jours et je lui ai dit de ne pas visiter mon profil du tout. Après avoir fait ça pendant près d’une semaine, mon ami a mis en ligne une story, je me suis retrouvé en haut de sa liste. Et quand j’ai mis en ligne une story le même jour, il était au milieu de ma liste, juste comme avant. Je suis presque sûr que la personne en tête de votre liste est celle qui visite le plus votre profil. »
D’autres utilisateurs ont fait la même expérience sans rien commenter ni liker et de fait, leur compte s’est retrouvé en Top Viewers ce qui confirme en partie cette théorie.
Une stratégie intelligente pour Instagram qui nous rend encore plus accro à ce Top Viewers que nous sommes « obligés » de suivre quotidiennement si l’on ne veut pas louper la liste des personnes touchées.
Le Top 50 des Viewers
Une seconde théorie vient confirmer l’importance de la chronologie. En effet, les 50 premières personnes de votre top seraient affichées par ordre chronologique et, une fois ce chiffre atteint, Instagram afficherait ensuite ceux qui interagissent le plus avec vos stories en fonction des vues, commentaires, likes, etc.
Cette théorie explique aussi que les simples vues restent prioritaires sur les likes et les commentaires ce qui expliquerait également pourquoi votre ex apparaît toujours dans le top. Disons les choses comme elles sont, il/elle vous suit de très près !
La version officielle
Au delà des expérimentations d’utilisateurs, le plus simple reste d’aller chercher l’information à la source. C’est ce qu’a pris la peine de faire le site Social Media Week en s’adressant directement à Helen Paige de l’équipe communication d’Instagram. Malheureusement, cette dernière évoque plus l’intelligence derrière le classement des stories que ses Top Viewers.
Elle explique que « les stories sont triées en fonction des moments qui vous intéressent le plus. La commande est déterminée en fonction d’un certain nombre de signaux, notamment: 1) la probabilité que vous soyez intéressé par le contenu; 2) la ponctualité des postes; et 3) vos relations avec la personne. La technologie est basée sur l’apprentissage automatisé, qui s’adapte à votre comportement et s’améliore avec le temps. Les visites de profil sont considérées, ainsi que les likes et les commentaires ».
Un fonctionnement un peu à la Facebook qui va analyser le temps passé à regarder la publication d’un ami et va nous en proposer plus si on reste longtemps sur la publication en question. En somme, plus que nos véritables liens qui peuvent se traduire par des interactions comme le like ou les commentaires, Instagram s’intéresse à notre comportement instinctif. Si une fille/un garçon vous plaît et que vous l’admirez de loin sur les réseaux sociaux, l’algorithme reposant sur du Machine Learning va très vite le comprendre et vous proposer plus de son contenu. On peut imaginer une version similaire sur les Top Viewers : si vous êtes à même d’être plus intéressé par le profil du Viewer, ce dernier va remonter dans le classement.
Les vues sur les profils également prises en compte
Afin de savoir ce qui peut vous intéresser, Instagram prend aussi en compte les profils que vous visitez. D’ailleurs, l’algorithme se nourrit également de vos habitudes sur Facebook ! En effet, on oublie un peu qu’Instagram lui appartient et donc, que les données sont constamment échangées entre les deux.
En définitive, il n’y a pas de combinaison magique à dévoiler. Comme tout algorithme, il s’agit d’un agrégat plus ou moins complexe de différents facteurs récoltés et analysés au fur et à mesure. Cependant, on peut affirmer que le temps passé sur un profil et ses stories (sans forcément interagir avec la personne) joue un rôle considérable. Vous savez maintenant comment éviter de passer pour le stalker du mois, pensez à diversifier les stories que vous regardez !
